At the end of November 2007, five days of consultations on Islam and HIV/AIDS were held in Johannesburg, South Africa. These Consultations were a great success and were attended by over 200 people from over 50 countries. Those who attended the Consultations were either, people living with HIV, Islamic scholars and academics from a variety of countries and backgrounds, practitioners fighting the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS, medical doctors or representatives from donor agencies.
During the Consultations, the participants discussed a wide range of issues related to HIV and AIDS in small groups. The purpose of these discussions was to generate religiously acceptable approaches to the HIV pandemic. It is hoped that these will help governments and organisations to effectively:
- Increase awareness of HIV and AIDS amongst individuals and communities.
- Halt the spread of HIV.
- Care for individuals affected or infected by HIV and AIDS.
- Support communities crippled by HIV and AIDS.
We are pleased to announce that many positive steps and initiatives have already come out of these Consultations. These include the establishment of an HIV-fund to help increase the number and quality of HIV-related projects in Muslim communities, and also a global network of HIV-positive Muslims.
This is just the beginning of the process and much more work will be carried out by various organisations over the coming months and years. This website will provide current news, information and relevant documents, to keep you informed about any new developments.
